Work and liberated passions įor Herbert Marcuse "The idea of libidinal work relations in a developed industrial society finds little support in the tradition of thought, and where such In his lexicon civilization was a depraved order, a synonym for perfidy and constraint. Fourier used the word civilization in a negative sense and as such "Fourier's contempt for the respectable thinkers and ideologies of his age was so intense that he always used the terms philosopher and civilization in a pejorative sense. ![]() Attack on civilization įourier characterized poverty (not inequality) as the principal cause of disorder in society, and he proposed to eradicate it by sufficiently high wages and by a "decent minimum" for those who were not able to work. Rubenstein have seen Fourier as motivated by economic and religious antisemitism, rather than the racial antisemitism that would emerge later in the century. By the end of his life, Fourier advocated the return of Jews to Palestine with the assistance of the Rothschilds. Fourier considered trade, which he associated with Jews, to be the "source of all evil" and advocated that Jews be forced to perform farm work in the phalansteries. There were incentives: jobs people might not enjoy doing would receive higher pay. Wealth was determined by one's job jobs were assigned based on the interests and desires of the individual. These buildings were four-level apartment complexes where the richest had the uppermost apartments and the poorest had a ground-floor residence. Fourier saw such cooperation occurring in communities he called "phalanxes," based upon structures called Phalanstères or "grand hotels". Workers would be recompensed for their labors according to their contribution. He believed that a society that cooperated would see an immense improvement in their productivity levels. Ideas įourier declared that concern and cooperation were the secrets of social success. In 1822, he tried to sell his books again but with no success. Fourier produced most of his writings between 18. ![]() After six years, the book fell into the hands of Monsieur Just Muiron who eventually became Fourier's patron. His first book was published in 1808, but it only sold a few copies. As a traveling salesman and correspondence clerk, his research and thought was time-limited: he complained of "serving the knavery of merchants" and the stupefaction of "deceitful and degrading duties." From 1791 to 1816 Fourier was employed in Paris, Rouen, Lyon, Marseille, and Bordeaux. Fourier's travels also brought him to Paris, where he worked as the head of the Office of Statistics for a few months. In 1791 he moved from Besançon to Lyon, where he was employed by the merchant M. This inheritance enabled Fourier to travel throughout Europe at his leisure. When his father died in 1781, Fourier received two-fifths of his father's estate, valued at more than 200,000 francs. Fourier later said he was grateful that he did not pursue engineering, because it would have consumed too much of his time and taken away from his true desire to help humanity. He wanted to become an engineer, but the local military engineering school accepted only sons of noblemen. The son of a small businessman, Fourier was more interested in architecture than in his father's trade. Fourier later inspired a diverse array of revolutionary thinkers and writers.įourier was born in Besançon, France on 7 April 1772. In Guise, France, he influenced the Familistery of Guise. Among them in the United States were the community of Utopia, Ohio La Reunion near present-day Dallas, Texas Lake Zurich, Illinois the North American Phalanx in Red Bank, New Jersey Brook Farm in West Roxbury, Massachusetts the Community Place and Sodus Bay Phalanx in New York State Silkville, Kansas, and several others. įourier's social views and proposals inspired a whole movement of intentional communities. For instance, Fourier is credited with having originated the word feminism in 1837. Some of Fourier's social and moral views, held to be radical in his lifetime, have become mainstream thinking in modern society. One big way that these TVs differ from each other is how long they can operate on a battery charge. Some portable TVs can be powered via both, providing the most convenience. Persico also advises using a color that's two shades darker than your normal skin tone to create a subtle shadow effect. Alternatively, Los Angeles-based makeup artist Shadi Malek recommends applying the product "directly where you want it to be the most concentrated and blend outwards." Regardless of how you choose to apply your contour, remember that less is always more." For me, contouring is about subtly defining your natural features," says Persico. Now, back to the good stuff, a.k.a contour sticks. Whereas bronzers tend to be warmer-toned and often add a touch of shimmer to the skin on the highest points of the face, contour products lean more matte and cool-toned, and ideally one shade deeper than your bronzer in order to mimic natural shadows along your face shape. Just wish it had DNG profile support, but it seems that Darktable has its own color calibrating system built in much like Photo Ninja. Darktable especially I find to be extremely competitive with paid options. Darktable and Rawtherapee really are fantastic. The choice of software really is overwhelming. I was just thinking, the extra flexibility in raw files comes from the higher bit depth + the ability to adjust the color profile via ICC or DCP, right? I am thinking after the image is demosaiced, color profile assigned, and white balance set, one would not lose out on the afforded flexibility by exporting to a 16 bit tiff once those are set and continuing editing in a different program. I need to just settle on a work flow too. ![]() So many software options just put the breaks on editing. I also own Affinity photo and need to learn it. But I might prefer the work flow of photoscape x. I have many Olympus cameras and find RawTherapee/Art to work the best with the raws. That would allow you to use Affinity photo or Capture one as options. Reading the newest color checker software it may produce either ICC or dcp files: Photo Ninja has its own profiling built in. I got a color checker for Christmas, and I am fond of Lumariver Profile Designer, and I have to say it's been interesting going back to old visible light photos and revisiting them with the calibrated colors. The reason I am particular about the DNG profiles is that they are a lot more flexible than ICC. Was hoping to just use one program but oh well. I just want to settle on a consistent workflow. It may be that I use Rawtherapee for the demosaicing and assigning a DCP, export to TIFF, and edit those in darktable, luminar, or gimp as needed. That being said without all the add ons I have it would be much more limited, but I think it would be easy for a photoshop user to use.įrom what I am seeing it doesn't look like photo ninja takes DNG profiles (DCP), correct? The GUI is very close to Photoshop's own, not sure what it used to be like but when I've seen Photoshop videos on youtube I generally feel like I could jump straight into photoshop without skipping a beat. I have been using GIMP for a while and have several plug ins (GMIC, NIK Collection, Darktable, Rawtherapee, and many more as well as various scripts and other user-created plugins). GIMP now handles 16 & 32 bit files, both as floating point and as integer. I long shied away from GIMP as it was 8-bit only, but the new version 2.8(?) is now capable of handling larger bit depths. However, the learning curve is *steep*. ![]() If it had DCP support it would be a happy median between Luminar and Darktable.ĭoes anyone have any recommendations for an editor that supports dcp files? Actually really like this, but it lacks DCP support. If anyone uses this software and has encountered and somehow fixed this, let me know what you did please! There are other bugs as well, and the program is just slow doing basic things even when your computer exceeds the recommended specs. I'm not the only one to experience this, and Skylum has kept promising to fix it in an incremental update but never do. This holds true regardless of whether or not it is in the DNG format, and it's not specific to a particular camera. In other words, it acts as if undemosaiced raw files are demosaiced. While it has masking, layering, and DCP support, it often doesn't recognize raw files as raw which prevents applying one. This software is kind of a joke, in my opinion. Fluorite is probably the most common of these “long wave” fluorescent minerals. There are some minerals, however, that will glow under long wave UV light, or long wave black light. This means that a large amount of visible light is passing through the filter, which over powers, or drowns out the actual UV light. As I mentioned earlier, the inexpensive LED black light lamps almost always emit long wave UV light. Unfortunately, the inexpensive UV LED flashlight you bought for $5 probably isn’t going to work very well with many minerals. Will the Inexpensive Blacklight Flashlight I Bought Make Minerals Glow? Not only is this light visible, it’s often times reflected as fluorescent light. When these minerals are under short wave ultraviolet light, or short wave black light, which is invisible to us humans, the light that is reflected by the minerals is reflected as visible light. It is this change in wavelength that creates the color of the mineral. When light shines, these special minerals temporarily absorb some of that light and then release, or reflect, a small amount of light that is of a different wavelength. This special ability is called fluorescence. Whats interesting though is that some minerals have the unique ability to glow under black lights, or UV light. As a matter of fact, that is how we humans are able to see the minerals. Why Do Minerals Glow More Under Short Wave Ultraviolet Light?Īll minerals have the ability to reflect light. Since most of the visible light is filtered, and only UV light is passing through, short wave ultraviolet lights are the best black lights for minerals. These filters can be somewhat expensive which is why high quality shortwave UV lights are so expensive when compared to unfiltered long wave UV lights. Too much visible light passes through and drowns out the “glow”.įiltered short wave UV lights on the other hand, filter out almost all visible light, allowing only shortwave ultraviolet light to pass through. As you can imagine, unfiltered UV lights allow a large amount of visible light through, rendering it useless for making many minerals glow. There are two types of short wave UV light filtered and unfiltered. In nature, long wave UV light is present in sunlight and is not harmful to humans. ![]() Because of that, the black lights we use as hobbyists are a great way to produce long wave UV light. These filters are generally inexpensive to buy for that reason. Long wave UV lights have filters which screen out a lot of the visible light they produce, but not all. What is the difference between short wave UV light and long wave UV light? Long wave Ultraviolet Light Ultraviolet light falls in the range of the electromagnetic spectrum between visible light and X-rays. It’s on this spectrum that we find UV light, X-rays and gamma rays.
